Spiral Graphics announced a project that promises to change the way game designers and 3D artists think about tiling textures. Organica, a node-based tiling texture generator slated for release this summer, will offer a unique set of toolsfor automating the generation of seamless textures.
"Node-based systems have already revolutionized high-end 3D graphics by allowing users to visually define complex behaviors," says A. R. "Atlas" Roufas, President of Spiral Graphics. "Organica is the first program to apply this power to seamless texture generation."
Users of Organica build textures by combining various "nodes." Unlike many
traditional texture systems, which tend either to be overly rigid or require knowledge of a specialized language, making these combinations in Organica simply involves dragging nodes from a library into their desired positions. "It's like playing with LEGO, but with very powerful results," Atlas comments. "Organica is surprisingly quick and easy to use."
Individual nodes contribute a wide array of visual effects, such as cracks, dents, flagstones, moss, corrosion, marble, wood, highlights, and shadows. Textures will automatically tile, with no additional work required of the user, making Organica extremely attractive for 3D games designers, and others, who often require hundreds of tiling textures in a single project.
A gallery of textures made with a preliminary version of Organica is available at www.spiralgraphics.biz.
